Vietnam Sapa (Day 2)

Day two in Sapa, started out to be a much clearer day, some light fog/mist in the valley below, but a nice day, until... Well, lets just say I started to feel ill... After a visit, or two, to the bathroom, we headed down fro breakfast where all I had was some toast, and a small peach juice. I was feeling ok, but just as we were about to leave, I felt a little light headed, which passed quickly, but I HAD to get to the bathroom where I brought up breakfast!!!

Anyway, as I had felt better, and not wanting to miss out on the minority tribe people down in the valley, we met our guide and jumped into the bus for the drive down into the never never!

At one of the 'lookouts' along the way, my stomach started to twist and turn, but I pushed on until we hit the valley floor, where all I wanted to do was to stay in the bus and sleep; which I did! J and M took my camera into the village, which looked pretty good!

When they returned, it was time now to drive UP to Sapa, and through to another minority tribe people. Along the way, I dozed in and out of sleep, and felt a little better when we arrived! We walked along a road, but about 2/3 along the way, I could walk no more, and whilst I rested, J & M pushed on with the guide. I stayed and rested on a log.

Whilst there, a group leaving with local women carrying their wears in back pack, and all seemed to be having a good time. Next thing I knew, 3 young boys (maybe 5) came up from the track we walked along. Two of them came towards me from the front whilst the other (I noticed) went behind me. Luckily I knew my wallet (in my front pocket) was safe, and whilst I was chatting with the two, I felt a small hand on my wallet! I gave a very stern 'NO' to him, and he giggled it off... I grabbed some photos of them, but when I went to take the attempted 'pick-pocketers' photo, he waved his hands and didn't want it taken at all!. I was showing the two in-front the photos, again I felt a small hand tapping my wallet, and I snapped back a 'NO', and gestured them to leave...

We eventually walked back to the bus, where we drove back up to Sapa (and the dodgy hotel) for a rest, before dinner (I did not eat) and the train back to Hanoi.

However, the drive down the mountain was in very thick fog, we saw an accident of a car into a gutter, and arrived to a hectic scene inat the station. We quickly found our carriage and got settled in!

The overnight train however, was a complete disaster! It was hot, so hot in fact that my bed was drenched, M moved down from her bunk at the top to the floor, and we ended up having the cabin door open, the window pop as well, simply draw out the heat! It didn't work...

A small bit of confusion regarding location of pick-up, guide or no guide, but it was all sorted out quick enough, and we eventually got to a hotel to shower and have breakfast prior to the drive out to Halong Bay. But that is for another post...

Vietnam - Sapa

Last night, we boarded the Sapalay Express, the train (overnight) from Hanoi to Cao Lai where were to me the guide for the time here in Sapa. The train itself was not to bad, it took a total of 281klm, an average speed of 33klm/hr, (max of 83.5) and took a total of 8hrs and 25 mins! I have an app on my iPhone called Endonmondo that measures all of this via GPS tracking!

We arrived a little later than we had thought, and our guide was holding up the sign to identify himself. From here, we were to climb up 1500m to Sapa. The drive was slow, bendy and steep! And before too long, we had entered fog; which we would remain in for most of the day!

Our guide took us to, well, a 'Hotel' where we could shower and have some breakfast FOC. Just as well, as it was a DIVE of a place, and the breakfast was equally so! But a shower we did, and that was an experience as the shower head and the power for the hot water were next to each other!!

Anyway, we were picked up and away we went to search out Sapa. First stop, was a drive up to the top of a hill, just near the 'Summit'! Along the way, we broke out of the fog, and had the most glorious views... We also visited a nearby waterfall called the 'Silver Waterfall'

We returned back to Sapa to collect our bags, and then for lunch. After lunch, we checked into our hotel, which is very nice, and then onto a trek... I have not walked down SO many steps in all my life!! We soon entered into the Cat Cat people, a minority tribe here in Sapa, and one of 5 minority groups. We walked, and walked, passed through little villages and came down to the most beautiful waterfall area. It was good to relax for a little bit before starting the climb back up out of the valley. Luckily though, for us, we were met by the driver and the car! By this stage, the fog had set in even thicker! We showered, and got ready for dinner, which was a 10 minute, uphill walk, in the dark and thick fog.

It has been another long, and exhausting day, good night!

Vietnam - Hue and the heavens opened...

Around 3-4am, we were all awoken by the rain, not just a shower, but HEAVY rain!!! And it was not relenting! And this was the day that we were to be seeing so many things as well! Our drive to Hue saw us leaving My Son, and our first stop was to buy a Buddha... M was buying, both J & I were looking! (this is not the purchased Buddha, but one I liked and was about 1m from L - R!)

With purchase made, we continued along the drive, and we soon started the climb up the mountainside. This pass, known as 'Foggy Pass', and it lived up to its name! There is, of course, a boring old tunnel we could have taken straight through, but thats no fun at all!, so we wound our way like a snake up the mountain to the 'check-point' that once was occupied by the US Forces. It is also at this point that South Vietnam (only has two seasons) meets the North, (which has four seasons)! So its an important stop!

We also stopped at the bottom, for a quick photo opportunity, that was stunning where the clouds were meeting the Pacific Ocean.

It was late in the day, and we were given the option of lunch first OR start seeing places, so as it wasn't raining, we opted for lunch - what a mistake! BUT, after lunch, we visited the Tu Duc Tomb, the Royal Palace and the Pagoda and Buddhist Monks.

We quickly stopped at our guides, dads, coffee shop, which had very small/narrow chairs!!

Vietnam - Ancient Town - My Son Holy Land

Today, we had a bit of a drive to the religious centre of the former Champa Kingdom. It was a long drive, the weather was hot and humid, but the net result of the relics we saw, were simply amazing!

For our return into My Son, we had to do the final fitting from the tailor that was making our clothes. I had 2 x pairs of shorts, a T-shirt and a casual cotton shirt being made. I, as with J & M, were impressed with the speed that they were made as well as the quality! We then headed for lunch in the village.

We then headed back to the hotel, J had a foot massage whilst I grabbed a shoulders, neck and back; and I felt great for it! M rested a little, but ended up catching the bus up to the 'beach'! it was nearly time to head back into My Son, as we all wanted to get the lanterns and the bridge lights on tonight... We found a new place for dinner, and the mother of the owner was a cute little thing!!
