It's 11.35pm. We have just packed our bags. Oh my, where has all this stuff come from? and yesterday we posted a 10kg box back to work.

We have had a good weekend. Yesterday we all went to Camden Town Markets, which took us through to early afternoon. B and I got new shoes. I really needed some walkers, the paths here are all uneven with cobblestones just about everywhere, and the shoes I brought with me were just not good enough. I have real London walkers, they are called Fly London. I gave them a workout today, at Kew Gardens.

Yesterday, B and I also took the ferry down the Thames to Greenwich. Greenwich looked great but by this stage we were both quite tired. We should have stayed on the Ferry for the return journey as it was the last one for the day. Instead we caught the light rail, messed up with the train lines and after what seemed like half a dozen trains later ended up at Bayswater where we needed to get off for the walk back to the hotel.

The day at Kew was good. I don't know what we were thinking though - the plan was to do Kew in the morning and the Crown Jewels in the afternoon. We never got to the Crown Jewels though. Kew is a fantastic Botanic Gardens, in particular the tree top walk.

Tomorrow we leave for the conference in Aalborg. So it is time to pack up the computer and get a good night sleep.

It is now 11.15pm so this is going to be a quick one. It is taking a bit of getting used to the fact that it doesn't start getting dark till really late. I mean really late, you think it is about 7pm and it is actually 10pm.

Wednesday we had a really good meeting with South Gloucestershire, it is really amazing the size of some of these councils. Again this Council has 70 Councillors! and I think it was 9000 employees. The range of their functions though is more than local government in Australia, including schools amongst other things.

We tried our first 'cream tea', which is a devonshire tea in our language. It was recommended to us by the Officers at South Gloucestershire, I thought it was actually going to be a cup of tea with clotted cream instead of milk, it didn't sound at all appetising for someone who doesn't even like milk in their tea. R and B seemed to know exactly what it was, silly me.

We traveled back to London today via a fly by visit of Bath. I could have easily spent a week in Bath. This has been my favourite spot so far - I am already planning a holiday just to Bath. It is such a fascinating place, the streets and buildings, the Roman Baths, and the shopping.

We got back to London and have returned to the hotel we first stayed in, in Kensington Gardens. We have been given rooms under the street level. They are a bit bigger, which has made it a bit easier to sort out our paperwork for the next Council visits. We grabbed dinner from the local Marks and Spencers - I am really getting into this prepackaged but fresh meal concept. Tonight was steamed green thai chicken, and raspberry and chardonnay dessert. It enabled us to get through our work and still eat at a reasonable hour.

Anyway gotta go. We have an early start to get to Ealing tomorrow and a visit with the Chair of the Ealing Local Agenda 21 Pollution and Public Health Project Group.
Hi!!!
Well, after leaving Bristol this morning, we headed for Bath. It only took about 30-45 mins to get too, and was FANTASTIC!
Bath was full of old world charm and the buildings were great. We went to the Roman Baths, (I will post the pics tomorrow as it is 11pm here and we are tired)! I am sure that Lou will also want to make an entry about Bath, so I will leave it for her!
Today was also a bad day for the air system. There was a computer system upgrade overnight, and when they rebooted it after it's install, it did not work! The follow-on effect was that ALL airports in the UK could only land, NO take-offs at all, until mid morning, but had problems all day! I hope that we do not have that sort of problem on Monday for the flight to Denmark.
We have had a bit of rain tonight, I hope it is raining at home!

Hi Folks!
Well, it is 8:10pm and it is still broad daylight!!! After trying to get adjusted with the daylight till almost 10pm, Louise has gone to bed totally, and physically exhausted!!
Last night, we had dinner with Ginnie Parker, who is the 'Sustainable City Policy Manager' for Bristol Council. We had 'Bangers 'n' Mash' which were organic pork and garlic. We also had onion gravy!! Dinner was great, thanx Ginnie!
Both Louise and Ruth had a long day of meetings with Bristol Council, whislt I did the Big Bus Tour around Bristol. It was great seeing the River Avon which has a tide of around 13 metres! Bristol is fantastic in it's history and culture. Very easy going.
Dinner tonight whilst Ruth visited friends, was from 'Marks and Spencer'. They have a HUGE range of meals. Louise had (for a starter) Crispy Mushrooms with Garlic Mayo and then Sicilian Orange Chicken with Pecorino Roast Potatoes. Where as I had boring old Southern Fried Chicken & Fries!!!
I have updated the pics yesterday, and I am about to add in the pics so far from Bristol, so do go and have a look!!
Today, the girls had a meeting up at Sth Gloucestershire. The Council chambers were in a little country town named Thornbury. Quite quaint really, and they had at the entrance to town, a little 'Community Garden' project. When I went to the visitor centre to ask about it, the lady there told me that they are the 'Allotments'! Also in town, they have a Sensory Garden, and some of the trees in ther are good old aussie Eucalyptus!!! And, whats more, in one there was even a Black Bird's nest. See the pics!
Oh well then, I had better go and up-load the pics.
Take care.

"Dull and damp, becoming brighter" was the weather report for today.

It is 5.45pm, Tuesday, 2 June, and we are not long back at the unit. We had a really great day with Bristol Council today. We met with half a dozen council officers and it was all really interesting stuff. I could easily spend the rest of the week here learning from these people. They have a great setup, situated within the CREATE centre, which is a remodeled warehouse with exhibition space, meeting rooms and their offices. Attached to the centre is also a demonstration eco-home operated by volunteers.

We got so much information today we are quite exhausted. Thank goodness we don't have to think about dinner as have been invited to dinner at Ginnie, the Managers tonight, how friendly is that.

We did manage to see some of the sights from the harbour, when we caught a ferry back from the Council. Unfortunately, my camera battery went flat before we caught the ferry so I cannot share the views.

B did some sightseeing and sorted the leak from the apartment above, which didn't look like much when R and I left this morning but really began to flow mid morning. This place is a bit dodgy in some areas - wait till you see a photo of the ironing board when it gets posted.

Anyway gotta go - bangers and mash awaits.

01 June, 2004

Hi folks,
Well it's now 10:25am June first and what am I doing??
I am doing the washing on a cold and damp Bristol morning. Have just come back from breakfast, where I saw both Louise and Ruth off to work, and sat down (after trying to work out how the washing machine/dryer combo works) to update the pics in the yahoo briefcase. I was sitting here and suddenly I could hear this dripping sound.... DAMN, the unit above us has got a water leak into our dining room (where I am sitting) and it is running down the wall, into a POWER POINT!!
I have been down to the management desk, and there is a plumber on the way!
It seems to be my (un)luck, because when I arrived the day before Lou and Ruth at the hotel in Kensington Gardens, I was upgraded to the 'Executive Suite' as the room I was allocated to was un-made, and with dirty laundry from the bathroom still there!!! I was glad with the up-grade though!!
Once the dryer has finished, I am off to hop on the Big Red Bus tour of Bristol. 7.50 (GBP) will get me a 24 hour commentary trip around all of Bristol. Then, I will take the girls along the same route and tell them what I was told, (we are on a budget here and they are working after all)!!!
Well, I had better go now and get ready. Machine just about finished, and there is a lot to see (I hope).
Cheers
Bernie
It is now 10pm, Monday, 1 June.

We are in Bristol and it is wet. Today was pretty much a travel day, we hired a car to get to Bristol, which I am very grateful for. I don't think I could have handled lugging bags on and off trains, and up and down stairs. As it was bank holiday here and nothing much was open, it was a good day to travel and get organised for the weeks meetings.

Photos will be loaded up for viewing tomorrow.

31 May, 2004

It is now 11.54pm, Sunday 30 May.

We have not long returned back to the hotel. It has been a jam packed weekend. We had a great night at Anjli and Rohan's. It was a really relaxed evening, Anjli cooked us fantastic Indian, Ruth frayed Anjli's jeans for her and through good conversation we viewed A and R's wedding photos. It is a year since they got married. Time really has rushed by. Although jet lag seemed to have overlooked us, we left at 10pm, a good night's sleep was in order for an early start at the Portobello Markets.

Saturday we did the Portobello Markets - they were a little overwhelming from both their size and the amount of people they attracted. We got their early but were over them by 1'ish and only about 3/4 through. We also visited Brixton, R's old neighbourhood, went into central London on a red bus,and had a look at some of the shops on Regent St, including Past Times. We discovered the Marks and Spencers just around the corner and down the road which might be the place to get dinner one night. The range of pre-packaged meals was unbelievable, does anyone here cook a meal from scratch?

Jet lag kicked in early afternoon for me and I had completely lost it by 6'ish. I had a sleep before dinner but was a walking zombie. I think the lady at the Carribean restaurant (Mr Jerk - that was what it was called, really) we went to for dinner may have felt a bit sorry for me as she brought me over an extra drink of their Pinapple Punch which was like a pineapple smoothie. We were home by 9pm and I slept right through till 8am the next day.

Sunday we did the full on tourist thing visiting Kensington Palace, Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, Fortnum and Mason, Tea Museum, The Globe, Coventry and just a few bridges -Millenium Bridge, London Bridge, Tower Bridge. The highlight of the day though I think was the ride on the London Eye (see it here) which, was truly amazing and well worthwhile.

Anyway time to sleep, we are off to Bristol tommorrow.

Hi all, We had a great visit with Enfield Council today. We met with Sule and Tom and it was kind of weird to find out how similar our councils are. Enfield has delivered some great LA21 programs, I particularly liked the black and ethnic groups art group who made baskets from telephone cabling, and the blow up earth ball in the park which people could write messages which are then used in planning for their city.

We had lunch with Sule and Tom at a local pub, which we got to by walking along a canal which is apparently the drinking water. On our way to the pub we also spotted a squirrel rustling around in the grass. Check out the photos. I am going to get some peanuts so that I am prepared to lure one my way next time I see one.

We also now have our mobiles working, thanx to the optus man who went to great lengths in helping to identify us.

Well gotta go, we are about to walk over to Anjli's for dinner.

It is Friday, 5.35pm London Time.

28 May, 2004

We're here! We arrived in London just after 12noon. Have checked in to the hotel, had a bite to eat, a shower and spent the rest of the time reorganising the luggage, and sorting the gifts and information we are giving to the Councils we will be visiting with.

R and I are both exhausted having only had a couple of short and disturbed sleeps whilst on the 23 hour plane trip, so I will end now. I am struggling to make much sense to myself and we need to determine how we will be getting to Enfield Council who we will be visiting with tomorrow.

At least you know we got here ok. Our mobiles are not working though, hopefully this will be sorted shortly.

Hello from Narita!!!
Well after a fairly uneventful flight, I arrived in Narita last night at around 6pm local time (7pm Syd time).
As we were approaching Guam, we had to fasten seat belts for a bit of turbulence, but that was all there was. As we approached Narita, I could not get over the amount of Rice Paddy Fields there were, it seemed to go on for miles!! Everything is so green over here!!
I had a hamburger for dinner, and it cost 2200 yen (approx 32AUD! Ouch!!
Well I am sitting here now on a free service that the Narita airport have set up. I am overlooking the transport that takes passengers from the satellite terminal from the main terminal. I will put some pics in over the next couple of days. It is weird, as these are controlled without a driver!! At the centre, there is a crossover in the middle, and the trains are propelled via magnetism or something!!!
My flight is leaving soon, so I will leave it there for now. Next stop, London!!
Cheers
Bernie

Well, its now less than 24 hours (for me) and I am now really getting into the groove of it all!!
We have had a very stressed weekend, and after a phone call this morning to …. L is now a lot less STRESSED!!! (Thank goodness).
I now cant wait to get on the plane, then I know it will all be ok. And I am sure that when L gets on her plane the following day, she will be ok as well. I am glad that she has got R going with her, she will be just fine!!
Well, I had better go and do my final bits of packing, and then off to A to see how the move has gone over the weekend. Next update, from me at least, will be from Narita Tokyo!!

23 May, 2004

Only a couple of days to go!!! We have had a very busy weekend.

I actually had a long weekend, having Friday as a flex day with mum. We went duty free shopping at The Rocks, although found nothing worthwhile buying. But we did find some good things, including a great button shop and a shop with clothes for me. We also managed a visit to the Mosman Art Gallery to view the Kerrie Lester exhibition 'A stitch in time'. She is my favourite artist right now!

Saturday I helped A move house, and today we got ready for the trip - lots of washing was done, which also included Macc. Thanx to L and C he is nicely spruced up for his sleepover(s) with Granny and Pop.

We also got visitors this evening from the littlest sister and her lovely boyfriend, and the sister next down. It was really nice to get together, and B cooked a fabulous dinner as usual.

Thank you, to all who have sent us 'bon-voyage' messages. It is going to be so good to just get on the plane and relax.

Hopefully, we can keep everyone up to date via this BLOG.

Burnt toast for dinner!!! B is now in the kitchen attempting to rectify the situation. I know, I know, you shouldn't walk away and forget that you have toast under the grill.... But the plants needed watering.

I hope the mum's had a great day today, especially my mum. My mum put on a lovely lunch for everyone - she is such a good cook. Nan made some great desserts, lemon delicious and a lemon cream sponge. Yummy. And Auntie C's chocolate fruit cake, was also very good. Why didn't I get the good cook genes?

Thanx dad for the Big Ears in the Noddy Plane. I needed a bit of a cheer up and that was a very nice surprise.

I hope my Pa gets rid of that cold soon. He didn't sound too good.

07 May, 2004

Hello World!!!
Lets see how my post works.
B
I'm back - after asking B how to jazz up my blog, we now have a webpage. I am not sure how I feel about this, it has all become a bit complicated. It is not too bad really given that it is his first attempt.

It is the littlest sister's Birthday today - Happy Birthday O. I think she is 27.

I have since finished the Noah's x-stitch and am back doing my quilt with help from Macc the greyhound and Jas kitty (not). When we work out how to add photo's you'll see what I mean - I am using the loungeroom floor as my workbench, and every time I turn around, one of them has set up camp and looks so comfortable I feel guilty moving them on.

Well it has been a rather tiring week so its off to bed with a DVD (thanks A, it will be 'Down with love').

24 April, 2004

After putting it off and putting it off.... I am finally putting pen to paper ( I don't know what the IT version of that is?).

Today we did the markets thing. It was our first time to the markets at Narrabeen Lagoon. We came away with a funky set of 4 noritake cups and saucers, very 50's looking with sailing boats brushstroked on them. We also bought a bali-style bamboo windchime with tropical flowers painted on each of the chimes and the coconut shell, the chimes are suspended from.

We also managed a visit with mum and dad, B a haircut, more shopping at Macquarie Centre which resulted in a shirt for B, and some grocery shopping.

Ann came for dinner, and more shopping via ebay, this time it was Ann making her debut into bidding online, with success no doubt due to our input. Ann and B are now playing X-box. I have been doing my Noah's x-stitch. But am now off to bed.

About Us!

In case you were wondering, we are L & B.

One day, whilst L was 'surfing' the net, she came across an old 'nick-name' that she used to have, Loobylu. She was aghast that something like this was on the net, so off she went to have a look. It was a blog and she became hooked!

As we were getting ready to go overseas, we thought that it would be a good idea that we create a blog, and this way our friends could have a virtual 'catch-up' of where we were and what we were doing. I even had a link to photos that I had uploaded!

Well, we have certainly evolved since then. Blogger now have an uploading tool for photos, but we don't use it going for flickr instead. The blog now carries anything and everything!
We are in Western Sydney, Australia, and work in opposite ends of the city. We have a lovely dog, (Macc) and a not so lovely cat (to me anyways, Jasmine).

Whilst we both like to garden, when it comes to the lawns, I get frustrated with L's presentation, lol lol. But that is just me being a fussy greenkeeper!

Whilst she is the master of the craft, I enjoy cooking! That's about it really, so sit back, enjoy the life and time of burntofferings!
